On March 22, 2016, rider Beatrice De Lavalette was at Brussels Airport. Then a bomb exploded. The injuries were so severe that she was forced to amputate both legs.

Beatrice De Lavalette is a US citizen, but grew up partly in France and was on her way to her parents in Florida during the terrorist attack.

Already five months after the terrorist attack, the 22-year-old, who has been sitting on horseback since the age of three, was back in training and one year after the amputation, she completed her first para-dressage competition.

Now the goal is to qualify for a place at the Paralympics in Tokyo later this year.
